Best before date on plastic lids

Flexible best-before date and batch labeling at a spice manufacturer

customer

A medium-sized spice manufacturer from Rhineland-Palatinate produces various spice blends in plastic tins with screw or sprinkle lids. The following information must be applied to each filling:

  • best before date
  • Batch number
  • Internal production labeling

The marking is made directly on the plastic lid.

challenge

Previously, small additional labels were stuck on the lids. This regularly caused problems:

  • Labels did not adhere permanently to slightly curved plastic surfaces
  • Additional material consumption
  • Restless appearance
  • High costs with frequently changing batches
  • Storage of different label variants

As production takes place in many small batch sizes, a flexible and quickly adaptable solution was required.

Solution

The company opted for the jetStamp® 990 for mobile direct labeling. Best-before dates and batch numbers are now printed directly onto the plastic lids - compact, clearly legible and without additional materials. Using suitable ink, high-contrast and smudge-proof markings are created on smooth plastic lids, slightly curved surfaces and matt and glossy plastics.

Implementation in the process

The jetStamp® 990 is used directly in the filling and packaging area:

  1. Set or transfer production data
  2. Positioning the cover
  3. Apply labeling at the touch of a button

Thanks to battery operation, no fixed installation is required. The device can be used flexibly between different product lines. Thanks to its compact design, the 990 is particularly suitable for smaller print images such as dates and batches.

result

Since switching to direct printing, the spice manufacturer has benefited from:

✔ No additional label consumption
✔ Clean and discreet appearance
✔ Quick adjustment when changing batches
✔ Reduced organizational effort
✔ Permanent labeling without detachment

Mobile direct labeling offers clear advantages, particularly in the case of multi-variant productions with frequently changing filling data.

Conclusion

Direct marking on plastic lids enables flexible and material-reduced implementation of best-before dates and batch requirements. With the jetStamp® 990, even small, curved surfaces can be marked efficiently and flexibly - without additional label logistics.
